چکیده
We report the identification of a possible optical counterpart to the super-Eddington X-ray source NGC 5204 X-1. New CHANDRA data shows that the X-ray source is point-like, with a luminosity of 5.2 × 10 erg s (0.5 8 keV). It displays mediumand long-term X-ray variability in observations spanning a period of 20 years. The accurate CHANDRA position allows us to identify a blue optical continuum source (mv = 19.7) at the position of NGC 5204 X-1, using newly-obtained optical data from the INTEGRAL instrument on the William Herschel Telescope. The X-ray and optical source properties are consistent with the scenario in which we are observing the beamed X-ray emission of a high-mass X-ray binary in NGC 5204, composed of an O star with either a black hole or neutron star companion.

We use archival HST/WFPC2 V and I band images to show that the optical counterpart to the ultra-luminous x-ray source NGC 5204 X-1, reported by Roberts et al., is composed of two sources separated by 0.5”. We have also identified a third source as a possible counterpart, which lies 0.8” from the nominal X-ray position. PSF fitting photometry yields V-band magnitudes of 20.3, 22.0 and 22.4 for t...
متن کاملA Hard X-ray Study of Ultraluminous X-ray Source Ngc 5204 X-1 with Nustar and Xmm-newton
We present the results from coordinated X-ray observations of the ultraluminous X-ray source NGC 5204 X-1 performed by NuSTAR and XMM-Newton in early 2013. These observations provide the first detection of NGC 5204 X-1 above 10 keV, extending the broadband coverage to 0.3 − 20 keV. The observations were carried out in two epochs separated by approximately 10 days, and showed little spectral var...

We obtained optical spectra of the counterpart of the ultraluminous X-ray source NGC 5408 X-1 using the FORS spectrograph on the VLT. The spectra show strong high excitation emission lines, Heii λ4686 and [NeV] λ3426, indicative of X-ray photoionization. Using the measured X-ray spectrum as input to a photoionization model, we calculated the relation between the Heii and X-ray luminosities and ...

متن کاملSpectral States and Evolution of Ultraluminous X-ray Sources
We examined spectral evolution in ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) with apparent luminosities of about 10 ergs s. Based on new results in this paper and those reported in the literature, two common spectral behaviors were found. Some ULXs in starburst galaxies have varying luminosity (L) but remain in the hard state with power-law spectra and a constant, hard photon index (Γ). Other ULXs, suc...
